What is a Powerchair?
A powerchair (also known as an electric wheelchair or powered wheelchair) is a battery-powered chair that provides mobility for people who have difficulty walking or propelling a manual wheelchair. Unlike mobility scooters, powerchairs are operated using a joystick controller, making them ideal for users with limited upper body strength or dexterity.
At NBR Mobility, we stock a wide range of powerchairs suitable for indoor use, outdoor adventures, or both. Our team has been helping customers across Norfolk and Suffolk find the perfect powerchair since 2001, and we offer free home demonstrations so you can try before you buy.

Powerchair vs Mobility Scooter: Which is Right for Me?
Choosing between a powerchair and a mobility scooter depends on your individual needs. Here’s a quick comparison:
Choose a Powerchair if you:
- Have limited upper body strength or hand dexterity
- Need to navigate tight indoor spaces
- Prefer joystick control over handlebars
- Require a more supportive seating position
- Want to get closer to tables and desks
Choose a Mobility Scooter if you:
- Have good upper body strength and can grip handlebars
- Primarily travel outdoors over longer distances
- Prefer a more traditional steering method
- Want a higher top speed (up to 8mph)
- Need to carry shopping in a front basket

Frequently Asked Questions
How far can a powerchair travel on one charge?
This varies by model, but most powerchairs offer a range of 10-25 miles on a single charge. Outdoor and heavy-duty models typically have larger batteries for extended range. Factors like terrain, user weight, and temperature also affect battery life.
Can I get a powerchair through the Motability Scheme?
Yes! Powerchairs are available through the Motability Scheme if you receive the higher rate mobility component of PIP, DLA, or certain other benefits. NBR Mobility is an accredited Motability dealer. Learn more about Motability.
Will a powerchair fit through my doorways?
Most indoor powerchairs are designed to fit through standard doorways (around 75cm/30 inches). However, it’s important to measure your doorways, corridors, and any tight spots before purchasing. Our free home assessment includes measuring your home to ensure the powerchair will fit.
Can I take a powerchair on an aeroplane?
Many folding powerchairs with lithium batteries are airline-approved, but policies vary between airlines. You’ll need to notify the airline in advance and may need documentation about the battery type. We can advise which models are best suited for air travel.
How do I charge a powerchair?
Powerchairs come with a battery charger that plugs into a standard UK household socket. Simply connect the charger to the powerchair overnight or when not in use. Most batteries take 6-8 hours to fully charge. We recommend charging after each use to maintain battery health.
Do you service and repair powerchairs?
Yes, we service and repair all makes and models of powerchairs, not just those purchased from us. We offer both workshop repairs at our Diss showroom and mobile repairs across Norfolk and Suffolk. Regular servicing helps keep your powerchair safe and reliable.
