What is a Mobility Scooter?
A mobility scooter is a battery-powered personal vehicle designed to help people with limited mobility travel independently. Whether you struggle with walking long distances, have a medical condition affecting your mobility, or simply find walking tiring, a mobility scooter can transform your daily life.
At NBR Mobility, we have been helping customers across Norfolk and Suffolk find the perfect mobility scooter since 2001. Our experienced team understands that choosing a scooter is a personal decision, which is why we offer free home demonstrations so you can try before you buy in the comfort of your own environment.
Types of Mobility Scooters
Portable / Travel Scooters
Lightweight and compact, these scooters are designed to be easily dismantled and transported in a car boot. Perfect for holidays, shopping trips, and days out. Typically travel up to 10 miles on a single charge.
Ideal for: Travel, car boot storage, occasional use
Pavement Scooters (Class 2)
Also known as Class 2 scooters, these have a maximum speed of 4mph and are designed for pavement use only. More robust than travel scooters with better suspension and comfort for everyday use.
Ideal for: Local shopping, pavements, indoor use
Road Scooters (Class 3)
Class 3 scooters can travel up to 8mph and are legal on roads (where no pavement exists). They offer the longest range, best suspension, and highest weight capacity. Must be registered with DVLA (free).
Ideal for: Longer journeys, rural areas, daily use
How to Choose the Right Mobility Scooter
Choosing the right mobility scooter depends on several factors. Here is what to consider:
- Where will you use it? Pavements only, or do you need road access? Indoor use or outdoor terrain?
- How far will you travel? Consider the battery range – from 10 miles for portable scooters to 30+ miles for road scooters.
- Do you need to transport it? Portable scooters dismantle easily; larger scooters may need a vehicle hoist.
- Storage space: Where will you keep it? Measure doorways and storage areas.
- Weight capacity: Ensure the scooter can safely support your weight plus any shopping or accessories.
- Comfort features: Adjustable seats, suspension, armrests, and controls all affect daily comfort.
Not sure which scooter is right for you? Our team can visit your home for a free, no-obligation assessment. We will help you find the perfect scooter for your needs and even let you try it in your own environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a licence to drive a mobility scooter?
No, you do not need a driving licence to use a mobility scooter. However, Class 3 (road) scooters must be registered with the DVLA, which is free. You must also be unable or find it difficult to walk to use one.
Can I use a mobility scooter on the road?
Only Class 3 scooters (8mph) can be used on the road, and only where there is no pavement. They must have lights, indicators, and be registered with the DVLA. Class 2 scooters (4mph) are for pavement use only.
Can I get a mobility scooter through the Motability Scheme?
Yes! If you receive the higher rate mobility component of PIP, DLA, or certain other benefits, you may be eligible. NBR Mobility is an accredited Motability dealer. Learn more about Motability.
Do you offer servicing and repairs?
Yes, we service and repair all makes and models of mobility scooters, not just those purchased from us. We offer both workshop repairs at our Diss showroom and mobile repairs across Norfolk and Suffolk.
Can I take a mobility scooter on public transport?
Most buses accept Class 2 mobility scooters, but it varies by operator. Trains generally allow scooters that fit within wheelchair spaces. Portable/travel scooters can be taken on most transport when folded. Always check with the operator first.
Is VAT charged on mobility scooters?
If you have a chronic illness or disability, you can purchase a mobility scooter VAT-free. You will need to sign a simple declaration form confirming your eligibility. Our team can help you with this.
